Plot:

It was 1984, the period of Stasi Rule in East Germany. The population was kept under strict control. Stasi, the East German (German Democratic Republic – GDR) Secret Police declared a goal – “To know everything”.

Gerd Wiesler is an assiduous, passionate, highly proficient Stasi investigator and interrogator. You can able to see his efficiency in the first screen itself where he record his interrogation and demonstrate it in his lecture with a firm and reticent character. He doesn’t have much in his personnel life.

Wiesler’s supervisor Grubitz invites him for a play, written by the playwright Georg Dreyman also attended by the Minister Bruno Hempf. The Minister has a doubt about the loyalty of Georg on the ruling society. So he asks Grubitz to watch Georg for him. Grubitz assigns the task to Wiesler, to spy and collect evidence on the playwright Georg Dreyman and actress girlfriend Christa-Maria Sieland. However Hempf can’t take his eye from the leading, beautiful actress Christa-Maria.

Wiesler is offered with all new latest surveillance equipments. With the help of a technical team he bugs into Georg Dreyman’s apartment and install the cameras and mic in all the rooms. His neighbor notices the bugging, but eventually it is noted by Wiesler and he warns her to be silent by a personnel threat.

Now the game begins.

Wiesler monitors all the daily activities of Georg and Christa in the behind scene unknowingly and documented. At Georg’s birthday party his friend Albert Jerska, a blacklisted communist presents him a musical notes – “Sonata vom Guten Mensch”. Soon afterward one day, Albert hangs himself. Wiesler comes to know the bitter truth of Christa. She has an illegal affair with the Minster Bruno. On every Thursday she used to comfort him, hiding the relationship from Georg. This is because she has an inferiority complex about herself, she believe that the Minister can easily do anything on her career with all his authority. Wiesler makes a situation to bring this illegal affair of Christa to Georg. Georg gets upset and begs her not to go with him and instinct that she is a great actress and she has to believe in herself first. But she continues the relations with the Minster. Soon after this, Wiesler starts to dislike the GDR.

After Albert’s death, George decides to write an article about the concealed suicide rates in the West Germany against GDR. So he and his friends ensure that his apartment is safe (unknowingly) and uses a smuggled miniature typewriter. They hide the typewriter under a room. They gather frequently and come up with the write up. Wiesler knowingly ignore all these activities and hide it from Grubitz with incorrect facts in the tracking document.

George’s friend publishes the article and it creates a huge impact in the GDR. Soon after the publish Grubitz comes to know about the smuggled typewriter and want to search George’s apartment for the typewriter. With all troops Grubitz search for the typewriter in George’s apartment. But it is not found. He enquires about any unusual suspects to Wiesler. But he lies that he hasn’t seen any suspect behaviour in George’s apartment. But Grubitz arrests Christa, for illegal drugs and ask about the typewriter. Even he assigns Wiesler for the interrogation and watched the conversation behind the scene. Wiesler asks Christa about the typewriter and add that they will do anything if she doesn’t answer the question. So she tell the location of the typewriter, which is hidden under a room. While Christa and Grubitz took time to reach George’s apartment, Wiesler flew soon to the apartment and steel the typewriter. Once the Grubitz and his troop come to George’s apartment for the second time search, they couldn’t find it. George realise that Christa disclosed the location, on the disgusted and guilt feeling she run from the apartment and died by falling on a truck in the pathway. The surveillance of Dreyman’s apartment is terminated. Certain that Wiesler has obstructed the investigation, but having no evidence to prove it, Grubitz demotes him to Department M, where he must tediously steam letters open and read them, and gives him a promotion ban until he retires in 20 years.

Four years later, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, George continues his life as a play writer with his new plays. One day on a stage play George happens to see Bruno, the failed Minister. Bruno says that he is wrong about his assumption and about the surveillance to George. Soon after that George check his apartment and comes to know the bugging. But he is confused with the article that he has published. So he goes to the Federal Commissioner for the Stasi Archives and reads the Stasi’s files. In the file he comes to know about incorrect facts. In the last page of the report he sees a red finger print and a marking ‘HGW XX/7’. He realizes that it is a Stasi Agent. George locates Wiesler and watches in distance, a former captain now working as a postman. He wishes to thank him but he can’t.

After two years, George publishes the novel “Sonata vom Guten Mensch”. Wiesler see the book poster at a bookstore. He enters into the bookstore and opens the book, find that the book is dedicated to ‘HGW XX/7, with gratitude’.  As he purchases the book, he is asked if he wants it gift-wrapped. Wiesler responds, “No, it’s for me.”

I liked

1.      The plot summary.

2.      The clear merge of the plot with the political facts.

3.      Ulrich Mühe’s stiff performance.

4.      The grip and threatening dialogues.

5.      The musical score.

This movie is based on the television series of the same name taken during 1970s. The television series had 5 sessions with an average of 20 episodes each. These characters are created by Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts. The plot is simple. Three talented girls work for unseen private detective named Charlie with his assistance Bosley. They solve the investigation with all their action passion and intelligence. The whole movie is doesn’t have logic in certain places. But if you really an action lover you have to try this movie. The music is good in its own action genre.

Everyone had heard of the movie ‘Psycho’. It was directed by Alfred Hitchcock during 1960 (!!!) and was considered one of the world famous psychological thriller movies of all time. Many film industries had remade this movie. I wonder what all the fuzz about him. Hmmm… Let see.

Alfred Hitchcock is also called as ‘The Master Of Suspense’.

He born as a British and initially he was taking Silent Films and Talkies during 1921 to 1940. After successful in his career he moved to America and became American citizen. Then he started to make the Hollywood movies.

Whenever I search for the best psychological thriller movies in google it displays Hitchcock movies all the times. What will be so much about the psychological thriller plot in 1950s and 60s? So I tried to see his movies. Last week I saw his two films Rope and Dial M For Murder.

In these movies I could see his distinct way of directions and he sustains the suspense, thrills, mystery till the end of the movie. The whole movie plot is like reading a crime or thriller novel. There aren’t many characters in these movies. The whole screenplay will stick to the plot and there will not be any unwanted scenes. You will know more about these characters as the movies progress as well as the solution for the mystery. He pictures more about the PERFECT MURDERS.

Plot:

The movie begins – “This is a simple story… but not an easy to tell… and it is like a fable full of wonder and happiness”

Guido an Italian Jew come to Arrezo located in central Italy to open a book store with his friend Nuvolari. He stays in his uncle’s home and worked temporally in his hotel as well. Then one day he meets a school teacher Dora. Actually she is an Italian Non-Jew from a wealthy background. Guido does all sort of funny things to make Dora to fall in love. Dora instantly falls in love with Guido. But Dora’s mother wants her to marry to a well wealthy guy and plans for her engagement party. In that party Guido looted her. They get married and lived happily and have a son Giosué. This is the first half of the movie happens before World War II. It is full of fun and comedy. Guido’s characterization is too good. He has full of humor, enjoys his life as it goes by and doesn’t hurt anyone. It is quit enjoyable.

The world war has begun already. After 5 year his fairy tale life comes to an end. One day Guido and Giosué are forced onto a train to concentration camp on Giosué’s birthday. Dora demands the general to take her as well. In the camp Guido and Giosué are put in the male ward and Dora has taken to the female ward. Basically they are separated. Guido has the responsibility to hide the hard part with a simple game. The second half is pictures how Guido manages to convince his son with all his humor in the camp. It is full of fun too but in the other way. Guido’s fiction plans are too good. He makes all his effort to make his son happy. I am very much surprised about the plot of the second part and it moves me very much.

The whole film is narrated by Giosué how his father encouraged and saved him.

This movie won – Best Foreign Language Film, Best Music and Best Original Dramatics Score. And it is nominated for Academy Award for Directing, Film Editing, Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.

I liked:

1. The whole plot.

2. The screenplay. It is a hard plot but screened very well.

3. Roberto Benigni’s & Nicoletta Braschi’s acting.

4. Giorgio Cantarini  cuteness and innocence.

5. Music. It is so plesent

4. Cinematography

5. The proper splits as first & second half.

Movie Meter – 5/5. Must watch movie.

They escaped from the scavengers and cannibalisms. In this situation how a father and son struggle to survey is the plot of this movie. The whole plot is about the journey of father and son. It pictures how the father resists the danger from the boy and guided him with all his hope. This movie is not for the week hearted people. It really makes me of afride of how the world will be in the future where people starving for food and only food, nothing else.

I liked:

1. Excellent performance by Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee
2. Narration & Dialogues – “Carry the fire in your heart”

Plot:

The movie begins with the Michael Sullivan Jr. words “There are many stories about Michael Sullivan. Some say he was a decent man. Some say there was no good in him at all… but I once spent six weeks on the road with him in the winter of 1931. This is our story.” Yes, it is again the father and son movie. But with some difference. The story line balances the characterization of father, son and between them. This balance is given very perfectly.

Michael Sullivan Sr. works for a gangster John Rooney, who raised him. One day Sullivan Jr. witness a murder by Rooney’s son Corner. To mute the witnesses he ruthlessly murder Michael’s wife and second son Peter. There comes the risk for Michael Jr. Now his father has to take care of him from all the dangers.

Christopher Jonathan James Nolan is a British-American film director, writer and producer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Nolan

I have seen his movies ‘The Prestige’ and ‘The Dark Knights’. They impressed me a lot. So I thought of seeing all of his movies. Well here they are.

Following:

Following
Following

It is a 1998 new-noir film. The story is about a young writer who used to follow different people with a set of rules to collect the materials for his writing. When he breaks that rules he fall into troubles. This film doesn’t have much budget at all. I liked the plot, screenplay and the characters.

Memento:

Memento
Memento

It is a 2000 psychological thriller film. The film is presented in two different sequence, a series in black-and-white, and a series in colour. Both the sequence meets at the end of the story. A young man has Anterograde Amnesi (Short-Term memory loss) wants to take revenge for his wife death. I liked the screenplay very much. Believe me I watched thrice to correlate both the sequences.

Insomnia:

Insomnia

Insomnia

It is a 2002 thriller film. Two detectives land Alask for an investigation on a young girl’s murder. Due to conflicts and previous deeds between them a detective is murdered by another. The movie takes both the murders plots and unties everything. Both the murderers are balanced very well. I liked the plot only nothing much in this movie.

The Prestige:

The Prestige
The Prestige

It is a 2006 mystery thriller movie. The plot is all about two magicians. Both magicians are craving for their position in the illusion industry. So they do all their tricks and cunningness. I liked the plot, screenplay and the characters. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale acted very well. The concept is awesome.

Batman Begins / The Dark Knights:

Batman_Begins
Batman_Begins
The Dark knights
The Dark knights

They are super hero films released on 2005 and 2008 respectively. The story is based on the DC Comics book. Well, it is not required to explain the plot for these movies. Both the movies are very blockbuster movies.

Inception:

Inception
Inception

It is 2010 science fiction film. I have to see the movie first before writing about it. [Kani: 12 December 2010] I have watched 6 times. I will write a separate post on this.

I like all of his films. Each movie has its own style of narrations, screenplay, the concept / plot and the characters. Simply they are unique to one among them. No movie has been conveyed in a free flow straight forward except Insomnia. You have to be alert, listen and correlate. If you missed any small part you can’t follow the reset of the movie. He unties the secrets towards the end of the movie as it progress.  His ideas are different. Christopher Nolan is one among the genius.

  1. Following – 1998 – Neo-Noir film
  2. Memento – 200 – Psychological Thriller film
  3. Insomnia – 2002 – Thriller film
  4. Batman Begins – 2005 – Superhero film
  5. The Prestige – 2006 – Mystery Thriller film
  6. The Dark Knights – 2008 – Superhero film
  7. Inception – 2010 – Science Fiction film

Plot:

Frank works in a company and April wants to be an actress. They both meet in a party. She starts liking him, the ideas and his confidence. They get married and moved to the 115 Revolutionary Road with their two kids on the suggestion of April as Wheelers.

They seem to be a very perfect couple to the others, but really they are not. April desperately wants to move to Paris and convince Frank also. When Frank asks for his resignation, the Manager offers him a promotion with a very good pay. He eventually accepts the offer and tries to change April’s plan. Again the problem starts between them. Even though if one agrees and accepts the other, the other day it ends up in a squabble and agreement.

Following a fight, they both have a very pleasant breakfast. Once Frank leaves to office, April tries to abortion her child on her own. But it goes wrong and eventually she dies. Now Frank devotes himself to the kids.

Milly, neighbour of Wheelers family tells the story to the new couples who accommodate the house 115 Revolutionary Road.

THE END

Anyone can grasp, understand and stick the most complex theories, formulae and ideas. But it is really hard to learn the relationship.

This is my first Hollywood movie that pictures the core relationship of a husband and wife. I agree, it is based on the book ‘Revolutionary Road’ written by Richard Yates.

Frank and April characters are equally exposed in this film.  It is inappropriate to judge these characters here. It is not apt to say that Frank is right in this part or wrong in this part. Similarly, it is not proper to say that April is correct in this part and wrong in this. It should be taken as how their views are thrown on the other. It is like how their love, equality, comfort, acceptance, adjustment, sacrifice are shared among them and between them. It is really a moving film.

Leo and Kate reunited again after the movie Titanic. I couldn’t imagine if someone would act as if them. They really did their splendid piece.

My favourite scenes:

  1. The first argument between Frank and April in a park. It clearly tells how they are.
  2. Frank’s train journey to his office. (Cinematography).
  3. April surprises Frank on his birthday. And then April made the next check-mate regarding their move to Paris. Her justifications.
  4. Frank watches the woods having drink looking for April when she left after an argument.
  5. The pleasant final breakfast between Frank and April.
  6. The brave decision taken by April.
  7. The hospital scene and the ending. (Turning down the volume of the hearing aid).
  8. The strong words that Frank and April speaks in the peak of the every arguments.

I liked:

  1. The concept / plot.
  2. The dialogs – “No one forgets the truth, Frank they just get better at lying.”
  3. Kate’s and Leo’s marvellous performance.
  4. Cinematography.
  5. Background score.

Awards and Nominations:

The movie has been nominated for the below category in 81st Academy Award.

Best Art Direction

Best Costume Design

Best Supporting Actor

Information from Wikipedia: By missing out on an Academy Award nomination, Kate Winslet became only the second actress to win the Golden Globe for Best Lead Actress in a Drama without receiving a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress for the same role. Due to the difference in rules between the Golden Globes and Academy Awards, Winslet’s performance in The Reader was considered a leading one by The Academy, despite winning the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for the same performance. According to Academy rules, an actor or actress may receive only one nomination in a single category. Due to Winslet’s performance in The Reader being nominated, her performance in this film became ineligible.

Other notable work of Sam as ‘American Beauty’, ‘Road to perdition’, ‘Jarhead’, ‘The Kite Runner’ (Executive Producer) and ‘Away we go’.

Revolutionary Road is in very apt path.

Is there is any limits in the way that a story has to be filmed. Guess no. A message can be delivered in multiple forms in a movie. 21 Grams is a 2003 American non-linear film and directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu who directed Babel. Don’t ever miss any part of the movie, and then you will not understand. Everything will be tied together towards the end of the movie.

This movie is similar to the movie Memento directed by Christopher Nolan, creator of Batman Begins, The Dark Knights, The Prestige and The Inception.

Title:

Why do you lose 21 grams of weight when you die?

The title refers to a belief propagated by the 1907 research of physician Dr. Duncan MacDougall which purported to show scientific proof of the existence of the immortal human soul by recording a small loss of body weight (representing the departure of the soul) immediately following death. The research did not follow the scientific method, showed wide variance in results (21 grams is an arbitrary figure; MacDougall’s actual results showed no reliable mean), and were widely dismissed by the scientific community, even at the time. No attempts to duplicate MacDougall’s findings have been successful. The film presents MacDougall’s findings as accepted scientific fact as a form of dramatic license. Courtesy:  Wikipedia

Trailer:

Plot:

The mathematician, Paul is a heart patient who is waiting for his heart transplant. His wife Mary, wants Paul to donate his sperm so that she can have his baby even if he dies. Cristina is recovering from drug addict and now she is living a peaceful life with her husband Michael and two daughters.  Jack engages himself in serving Jesus to recover from alcoholism. He becomes a very addicted religion person. He lives his life with his wife Marrianne and two kids.

The movie tells how a knot is made among Paul, Cristina and Jack.

I liked:

  1. Non linearity
  2. Naomi Watts’s acting
  3. 21 Grams.

I really disappointed in Gustavo Santaolalla’s music in this film. It doesn’t impress me as ‘My Motorcycle diaries’ and ‘Babel’ did.

Final narration by Paul:

How many lives do we live? How many times do we die? They say we all lose 21 grams… at the exact moment of our death.  Everyone.  And how much fits into 21 grams? How much is lost? When do we lose 21 grams? How much goes with them? How much is gained? Twenty-one grams. The weight of a stack of five nickels. The weight of a hummingbird. A chocolate bar. How much did 21 grams weigh?

My next movie would be Amores perros directed by the Alejandro González Iñárritu.

Trailer:

Plot:

The movie pictures how Mr. Barrie becomes a famous play writer with his new character Peter Pan and how the four kids helped him in creating the NEVERLAND. It may sound simple. But everyone know how hard to create a imagination and making others to believe. In 18th century he created character Peter Pan – who never grew old, Fairies. Beautiful fantasy isn’t it. An excellent movie. The film moves in many places.

Many places are splendid. Mr Barrie (Depp) brings out the confidence, straight forwardness, imaginations and belief from the kids. Everyone knows Johnny Depp only from Pirated Of The Caribbean. But see his film Secret Window and Chocolate. The relationship between Barrie (Depp) and Sylvia (Kate). It does in its way. Placing the kids in between the elderly viewers is a very good thought. It brings down everyone age.

I liked:

  1. Acting – Johnny Depp, and the kids. (Especially Freddie Highmore – one who acted in August Rush & The Spiderwick Chronicles)
  2. The cinematography.
  3. Music.
  4. Neverland.

The movie has been nominated and won Academy Award. (77th Academy Awards)
